The primary activity of the Friends of San Francisco Animal Care and Control is raising money for ACC and its rescue partners.
Why does a tax-supported agency like Animal Care and Control even need an organization like the "Friends"? ACC must share city revenues with approximately 75 other municipal agencies, and animals are not as high on the city's list of priorities as those benefiting humans. So the City of San Francisco severely limits ACC's budget. The city has suspended or disallowed many potential services and improvements at ACC due to lack of funds.
FSFACC has worked to improve this situation. Other city departments, like the Library, the Zoo, and Recreation and Parks, have nonprofit "Friends of" support organizations. The agency responsible for our city's homeless, abandoned and surrendered animals deserves at least as much. That's why FSFACC is "coming to the rescue."
You can be a "rescuer" too by becoming a Friend of ACC. Join us in improving the future of the animals in our community, in getting as many of them as possible into loving homes - and keeping them there. Have the satisfaction of knowing that your contribution directly benefits the less fortunate animals of our community. The IRS and the State of California have classified FSFACC as a nonprofit corporation, so donations are tax-deductible in most cases. Please join us or renew your membership today.
Our newsletter, "Friends & Companions," will publish your name in an annual list of all donors unless you request anonymity. Here are the donor levels we offer:

Donate needed supplies directly to ACC by buying them from Pet Food Express (PFE). Not only will this generous 24-store Bay Area pet supplies chain ship your donation directly to ACC for free, but you will get a 20 percent discount - AND your donation is tax-deductible! To donate new supplies to ACC call PFE headquarters in San Leandro at (510) 346-7777, extension 1133 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) or send an e-mail with order information to petmaster@petfoodexpress.com. Mention that you saw the info on the FSFACC Web site. The shelter needs the following three items on an ongoing basis. They are linked to their descriptions on PFE's site (prices show the 20 percent discount. Add your local sales tax.):
Cardboard cat scratcher: $7.99 each
Flea powder: $7.99 each
Kitty toys: $2.99 and up (minimum order: 10 toys, without catnip and that cats can enjoy by themselves)
The Community Thrift Store: 623 Valencia Street (near 17th Street). Donate your quality merchandise to this large second-hand emporium that supports nonprofits only. FSFACC gets a percentage of each purchase of one of your donated items, from designer shoes to TVs, books to toys, kitchen appliances to sports equipment. FSFACC's reference number is 120, so mention it when dropping off donations. (Note that the only vehicle access to the donation drop-off gate is going west on one-way Sycamore Alley, entered from Mission Street, at Sycamore and Valencia.)
Recycle your cell phone and earn a commission for FSFACC. Some people get a new cell phone as often as every 18 months. But what becomes of the old phone? Tossing it in the trash is not an environmentally friendly option. Cell phone components and batteries contain lead, arsenic and other toxins that can leach from landfills, contaminating groundwater. Wireless Fundraiser of Ocala, Florida accepts old cell phones for free and even provides free collection supplies, thus benefitting the environment and FSFACC at the same time.
